Accessing Data on a Windows Domain Server Without Joining The Domain (Win Home & Pro)
You can still access data on a Windows
domain server without joining the domain :
 |
To begin look for your searchbox

In the Searchbox or run utility,
Type: sysdm.cpl
Select the tab : Computer Name
Make sure, that the name of the
workgroup is identical
to the domain name!
|
Since you can't join to the domain (which handles the usernames and
passwords).
You MUST
make the login credentials on your Windows computer
system with a username
and password, which is identical in Active Directory
on the domain server.
 |
Now go to your
searchbox or run
Enter your server name see example:

You should now be shown something similar with your network resources |
If you try
to access a share on the Domain server and either the Username
and/or the password
does NOT match, then you will be presented with a prompt, to
define a username (with password),
which is valid on the domain server :

Use Cases/Disclaimer
Using Windows Home instead of Windows Pro in a domain
environment is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.
A situation where this is helpful in is when a user profile is already setup with the Home Edition of Windows and you would like to get to network resources.
Another situation could be such as a user that bring their own PC that needs to access network resources.
Notes: This can be used in Windows Pro just use Workgroup instead of Domain (Not recommended unless users profile is already in use).
This works in all versions of windows that uses workgroups and domains.
